Graduating Seniors Apply Now for Spring Break Career Week in LA

Spring Break Career Week in Los Angeles

The Department of Film and Media Studies is organizing a week-long career orientation in Los Angeles from March 16-23, 2013 for 10 qualified graduating seniors who wish to have a career in the film and media industry in Los Angeles. The week will consist of meeting alumni who work in various facets of the field, visiting work sites, attending workshops, screenings, and receiving valuable mentoring and contacts from “The Hollywood Hawks,” a group of KU alums in the Los Angeles area who actively work to be a direct link between the entertainment industry and KU.

Interested?  This will be a competitive application process, and each accepted student will be required to contribute $500 toward the cost of the trip. The Department and “The Hollywood Hawks” will be subsidizing the remainder of the costs associated with travel, lodging, and ground transportation. Part of the money paid by the student will be used by the student to pay for meals and other discretionary expenses (movie tickets, etc.).  Students and faculty/staff will fly together and stay at the same hotels. Transportation will be arranged by the faculty/staff organizers.


  • Statement of Purpose: Tell us about your specific interests in film and media (e.g., editing, writing, directing, camera work, etc.), and your future career objectives. Explain how this trip will fit into these plans, and what you hope to gain from attending a week long experience of this kind (1-2 pages).
  • Resume
  • Sample of Creative or Scholarly work:  10 pages maximum, or 10 minutes of a creative work. Please label clearly what your role in the piece was (if you were the cinematographer, for example).  We will return your sample if you request.
  • G.P.A. major 3.3; overall 3.0.  Please attach ARTS form. If you feel that you should be considered for this opportunity but have extenuating circumstances given your grades, please explain.  We may be able to grant an exception.
  • Required Written Report:  Within 30 days of the end of the trip, you will be required to write a one-page reflection piece for Department Chair Tamara Falicov about your experience, highlighting some of the key visits/contacts you made and what you learned while in Los Angeles.  You also may be asked to speak to a class about your trip.
